Host a screening party
Killing in the Name made its US broadcast debut September 14, 2011 on HBO. The premiere may have passed but it's not too late to show your support for survivors by hosting your own screening party of the film and getting involved with GSN.
HBO subscribers can access KIlling in the Name or on HBO go. If you decide to host a screening here are some tips:
Reach out to your friends via Facebook, your listserv, or your personal rolodex. Tweet about your event and include @globalsurvivors, @killinginthename and the hash tag #AVT (against violent extremism) to your posts. Find us on Facebook – – and share the details of your screening.
Learn more about the film and share the information with your guests. Click here to watch the film’s trailer and share the link.
Document your event. Take plenty of photos and/or videos and share those links with us. Your well-documented event can spark more informed dialogue and continue the conversation well after the premiere of the film.
After the screening, hold a discussion with these talking points in mind:
- What is Ashraf’s message? How can he use or improve it as a rebuttal to the comments made by Zaid and other extremists? How can we and others join him in countering the terrorists’ narrative?
- What do you think are some of the biggest challenges that Ashraf faces when speaking out against terrorism? What can be done to break down any barriers he may face?
- Can you think of any groups in your own community who would benefit from hearing Ashraf’s story or the stories of others like him who have been affected firsthand by terrorism?
- What actions can everyday citizens take to join and support survivors in speaking out? What are you prepared to do now to take action?
Share your voice with the world.
After watching the film, send us an email or create a short video telling us in your own words what you are doing to speak out against terrorism, what you plan to do, or how you have been affected firsthand by terrorism. Your emails and your videos will become a living testimony and magnify our collective voices. Keep your videos within 2-3 minutes and . We will post every video to our YouTube channel, and your video may be featured on our website where "GSN Speaks Out".
